I signaled for Izzy to hush and crept to the door where I put my ear against it and listened. At first I couldn’t hear anything but I felt someone on the other side. And then I heard breathing, faint at first but definite.

“Who’s out there?” I said in as normal a voice as I could manage.

The breathing seemed to stop abruptly as if whoever was out there had begun to hold his breath.

I inched up to look out the peep hole that I’d had installed but it was totally dark. Darker than it should’ve been.

Whoever it was had their hand over the peep hole.

“Paolo? Is that you? Do you want to talk?”

And then I heard the footsteps walking away. I strained to hear if they would take the elevator but I didn’t hear sounds of that. Pretty soon I heard nothing whatsoever.

I stood up and turned to look at Izzy who was sitting on the carpet, her head cocked as if trying to figure me out. I moved back to the kitchen and my hot toddy but decided I was no longer in the mood for it.

I don’t know why I thought it might be Paolo in my hallway. It could just as easily have been Zéro or even Julien.

Or, God knows, Muller.

It wasn’t easy to get into my apartment building. But somebody with Zéro’s skills or Muller’s access could probably have managed it.

Whoever it was, if they’d wanted to see me or talk to me why hadn’t they answered when I’d spoken? What made them change their mind?

It was too much for me to figure out, especially at three in the morning. I motioned for Izzy to follow me back to the bedroom but I could’ve saved myself the effort. She would go where I went in any case.

In spite of the mysterious phone call and the middle-of-the-night visitor, in spite of Paolo’s upsetting phone call and everything I’d learned today and in spite of the memory of Detective Muller’s new-found enmity of me—in spite of all of that, I do believe I was asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow.

The next morning I was awakened by the sound of someone pounding on my front door. I grabbed my robe and raced to the door, looked out the peephole. I opened the door. Adele stood in the hall holding two coffees and a box of pain d’épices, pain au chocolat and croissants from Eric Kayser’s. She stepped inside.

“Get dressed,” she said. “I’ll take Mademoiselle Izzy out.”

“What’s up?” I asked, feeling as if I hadn’t slept a wink last night. I felt a wave of confusion as I stared into the hallway. It had only been four hours since my late-night visitor.

I closed the door and turned to Adele who had set down the pastry box and was already snapping Izzy’s leash on her.

“I’m pretty sure the police are going to want to talk to you,” she said. “Better hurry.”

I felt my throat start to close up.

“Me?
